The school was one of several constructed after a school building tax was passed in Jefferson County in 1952.  It opened as Miles Lane Elementary School in 1956 but was renamed for early Kentucky historian John Filson in January 1957.  The address for the school was also changed from Miles Lane to Raydale Drive.  The property, near Shepherdsville Road, was sold to Donald Schnell in 1985 and it was converted to a nursing home.  In 1999 the home was the Regency Health Care Center.
