Woerner Metro Alternative School succeeded Woerner Junior High School, named in honor of Emma J. Woerner, the first principal of Atherton,  in the building which originally housed Atherton High.  When Woerner closed as an alternative school, Jefferson County Traditional Middle School moved to the site circa 1981.
