The Tenth Ward School became the Tenth Ward Colored School in 1911 when it became a school for black children. In 1912 the school had eighteen classrooms and a kindergarten. The school's name was changed to Coleridge-Taylor in 1913 in honor of English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.
