The Tenth Ward School was erected and opened in 1853. Its student population were white children. It became the Tenth Ward Colored School in 1911 when it became a school for black children. The school's name was changed again to Coleridge-Taylor in 1913 in honor of English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.
