Other Name: First Ward School (1st Ward School); First Ward School and Cabel Street Kindergarten
Last Address: 118 Cabel Street, Cabel and Washington streets
Year Opened: 1911
Year Closed: 1966
The school opened in 1865 as the First Ward School. The Louisville schools decided to give names to all schools rather than call them by locations such as wards in 1911, so the school was renamed for George Washington. In 1925 the school added a class for retarded students. When the school was closed in 1966, its student body was divided between Lincoln Elementary and Benjamin Franklin School. The school building was later demolished.
