The school was built in 1892. Its cornerstone reads Preston Street School. In 1901 the school was renamed George H. Tingley Elementary School for the retiring superintendent of Louisville city schools. An addition was attached to the building in 1955. Tingley was the last city school to have its own library, which opened in 1972. The building is now a family emergency shelter run by the Volunteers of America.
