With the beginning of traditional schools in the Jefferson County Public Schools, the school building that had housed Audubon Elementary since 1954 became Jefferson County Traditional Elementary School in 1976.  At the end of its first school year, the board of education approved two more traditional elementaries to open in the next school year.  A more distinctive name was needed, so the school returned to the Audubon name with the title Audubon Traditional Elementary School.
