Archives Closed Schools G-J: Heywood School

Other Name: John Healey Heywood School; Heywood Environmental School

Last Address: 422 Heywood Avenue

Year Opened: 1903

Year Closed: 1975

Heywood was named for a minister who served as a member of the Louisville school board for many years.  The school's original address was Fifth and O Street.  In later years O Street was renamed Heywood for John Heywood.  The school closed following the merger of Louisville and Jefferson County schools in 1975.  Heywood Environmental School then opened in the building.  The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.  Ninth and O Baptist Church bought the building in 1982 and used it for a few years for its school.  The church sold it in 1991 to a realty company.  In 2000 the Kentucky Racing Health and Welfare Fund, Inc., bought the building and converted it to apartments for retired jockeys and race track employees and its organizational office.
