Other Name: Sixth Street School

Last Address: 542 W. Kentucky Street, at Sixth and Kentucky

Year Opened: 1917

Year Closed: 1970

The Sixth Street School was renamed for kindergarten pioneer Mary D. Hill, sister of Patty Hill, who was also a kindergarten pioneer, in 1917.  The building was originally the site of Central Colored School.  The Hill School offered an Accelerated Class from 1918 to 1919 and Opportunity classes from 1919 into the 1930's.  Hill School closed in 1970 and became a drop-in center for adult education called the Hill Adult Learning Laboratory.  When Talbert School was renovated in 1977, the adult education program moved there.  JCPS sold the building in 1977 to Stewart Winner, Inc., which converted it to offices.  A document in the history file indicates the school was used as a hospital in the Spanish-American War and as a rescue center during the Ohio River flood of 1937.
