Heywood Environmental School, a school providing children with behavioral or emotional problems alternatives to the regular classroom setting, opened in the old Heywood School building.  In 1982 Heywood Environmental closed and was succeeded by  Prestonia Environmental School.  The Heywood building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.  Ninth and O Baptist Church bought the building in 1982 and used it for a few years for its school.  The church sold it in 1991 to a realty company.  In 2000 the Kentucky Racing Health and Welfare Fund, Inc., bought the building and converted it to apartments for retired jockeys and race track employees and its organizational office.
