The Portland Colored School was renamed Charles Young School in 1925 for a Kentucky native who attended the U. S. Military Academy at West Point and had a distinguished military career in the cavalry, the Spanish-American War, World War I, and as a military attache to Liberia. The school was closed in 1956 when Louisville city schools desegregated.
