The Washington school succeeded the Eastern Colored School in the same building. The school was named for prominent educator Booker T. Washington because he had once visited the school to inspect its operations. A new building was opened in 1966, part of a complex with Jackson Junior High, later named Meyzeek Junior High. The elementary was closed in 1975 to permit expansion of Meyzeek.
