"Colored Schools": Douglass School (a.k.a. Douglas School)

Other Name: Frederick Douglass School, Pearl Street Colored School, Omer Carmichael Elementary

Last Address: 314 Pearl Street

Year Opened: 1910

Year Closed: 1961

The school name was changed from Pearl Street to Douglass in 1910.  A spelling discrepancy may have occurred - there are several references to Douglas School rather than Douglass.  The school merged with Morris School to become Omer Carmichael Elementary in 1961 located at 512 S. Hancock .  Buildings in this area were razed for urban renewal and construction of Interstate 65 in the 1960s.  The street (Pearl) no longer exists.
