"Colored Schools": Bannecker Elementary School

Maiden Lane Colored School was renamed Benjamin Bannecker Colored School in 1911 for the famous astronomer, naturalist and author Benjamin Banneker or Bannecker.  The scientist used Banneker as his last name but the school apparently used the variant spelling throughout its history.  Bannecker School closed with the end of segregation.  The school building was later demolished.
