Official Name: Coleridge-Taylor Montessori Elementary School
Year Opened: 1913
The Tenth Ward Colored School, formerly the Tenth Ward School, became Coleridge-Taylor Elementary in 1913 in honor of English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Principal Joseph S. Cotter, a noted poet, selected the new name. The Tenth Ward building was erected and opened in 1853 at 13th and Green Streets. The address later became 1228 Liberty Street. In 1969 Coleridge-Taylor moved to a new building at 1115 West Chestnut Street.
