Elementary School Archives A-F: Engelhard

Official Name: Engelhard Elementary School

Year Opened: 1919

The Kentucky Street School was renamed Engelhard Elementary in 1919 in memory of Victor H. Engelhard, a local businessman and member of the school board. It was a three-story brick building located at 119 East Kentucky Street. Engelhard moved to a new building on South First in 1965. Engelhard was the first JCPS school to adopt a year-round calendar in 1994. Engelhard was chosen the National School of the Year in 1999 by the Walt Disney Company. The Louisville Deaf Oral School is now operated in the former Kentucky Street School / Engelhard building on Kentucky Street. The history folder includes information about a "pet library" started by the school library in 1969 where animals were "checked out" to classrooms for care and books about the animals were available as well.
