Official Name: Cochran Elementary School
Year Opened: 1900
Cochran Elementary was named for Gavin H. Cochran, a longtime president of the Louisville Board of Education. Its original location was Second and Hill streets. In its early years Cochran offered classes for kindergarten through eighth grade. Seventh and eighth grades were transferred to Halleck Hall in 1934. The school offered a "sight-saving" class for children throughout Louisville with impaired vision for many years. Cochran moved to a new building on Gaulbert Avenue in 1991.
