Official Name: Fern Creek Elementary School
Year Opened: Unknown
Fern Creek Elementary began in the nineteenth century and it may be the first school in Jefferson County. A log cabin school opened in 1792 somewhere in the Fern Creek area but there does not appear to be a direct link to this school. In 1911 a new one-room schoolhouse was built at Bardstown Road and Fern Creek Road. A three-story brick building on Ferndale Avenue succeeded it in 1922. This building also housed Fern Creek High School at its beginnings. Additions were made to the building in 1925, 1927, and 1945. Fern Creek moved into a new school building on the Ferndale Road site in 1967. This building received an addition in 1974. A large wing containing a new library media center and computer lab was added in 2001.
