Elementary School Archives A-F: Brandeis

Official Name: Brandeis Elementary School

Year Opened: 1913

The school was formerly at 26th & Date Streets (its address was 925 So. 26th Street).  Albert Brandeis, the school's namesake, was a lawyer associated with social service and Progressive causes such as the child labor law, regulation of working hours for women, compulsory education law, forestry law, juvenile court bill, and school suffrage for women.  The school had a training garden in 1914 due to interest in school gardening.  This garden presumably taught children to grow vegetables.  Brandeis moved to a new building at its current location in 1992.  The old school was sold to the city of Louisville and was remodeled for apartment residences, which opened in 1996.
