Official Name: Auburndale Elementary School
Year Opened: 1924
Kenwood School was renamed Auburndale Elementary in 1924 due to the area's resemblance to Auburndale, Florida. The school building was constructed in 1916 by T. J. Niles, father of folk singer John Jacob Niles. This school was located at 7260 Southside Drive. Due to overcrowding, Auburndale's district was divided and a new school with the Kenwood name, Kenwood Elementary, opened in 1954. A new school building for Auburndale was constructed in 1969 on New Cut Road. The old school building was destroyed by fire in 1970.
