Elementary School Archives A-F: Carter

Official Name: Carter Traditional Elementary School

Year Opened: 1970

Carter Elementary was the new name of the old Virginia Avenue Elementary School.  Jessie R. Carter served as the first principal of Virginia Avenue.  Carter became a traditional elementary in 1977.  Carter moved from Virginia Avenue to a new building on Bohne Avenue in 2001, adjacent to the DuValle Education Center.  Carter and DuValle share the renovated and expanded facility so the building was renamed the Carter/DuValle Education Center in 2000.  In 2005 the old Carter/Virginia Avenue building was used as a new private free boarding school named the West End School.
