Elementary School Archives A-F: Chenoweth

Official Name: Chancey Elementary School

Year Opened: 2002

Chenoweth Elementary is named for Dr. John H. Chenoweth, a nineteenth century physician whose family originally owned the land where the school was built.  The school is believed to be on the approximate site of one of the first log school houses in Jefferson County.  The Board bought the plot from the Masonic Home.  Chenoweth received significant damage in the 1974 tornado and the students finished the school year at other facilities.  School reopened at Chenoweth in the fall of 1974.  Chenoweth opened an outdoor classroom to study nature and science in 2005.
