Archives Closed Schools N-P: Primary Schools (Canal Bridge)

Other Name: Primary Schools at High Street

Last Address: Canal Bridge near High Street

Year Opened: 1846 circa

Year Closed: 1852 circa

Several primary schools, including separate schools for boys and girls, were opened in a facility at "Canal Bridge." A High Street address is also listed, as well as a reference to a "stone bridge." The main crossing over the Louisville and Portland Canal to Shippingport was at 18th Street and its approaches are currently visible on the Riverwalk. This crossing may be what was called Canal Bridge. These schools were presumably closed when several new schools were constructed and opened following the adoption of a new city charter in 1851.
