Parkland Junior High School was named for the area of the city of Louisville in which it was located.  In 1977 all junior high schools became middle schools.  Parkland was renamed Lyman T. Johnson Middle School in 1980 for a prominent Louisville teacher and civil rights activist who served as assistant principal at Parkland and was elected to the Jefferson County Board of Education.
