Archives Closed Schools N-P: Newsboys' Home Night School

Other Name: Boys' Home Night School

Last Address: 532 Third Street or 436 South Third Street

Year Opened: 1895

Year Closed: 1917

The Newsboys' Home, run by the Society for the Protection of Newsboys and Waifs, a local organization of businessmen and prominent men and women in the city, provided a home for homeless boys who sold newspapers.  The home operated its own private night school but the Louisville city school board furnished teachers and equipment.  By 1902 the school was listed as a city school in the Louisville directory.  Financial and discipline problems prompted the closing of the home.  Creation of juvenile courts and compulsory education laws and reform of child labor laws also contributed to the end of the home and the school.  The property was sold to W. B. Pell and Brothers in 1918 and money was donated to local charities.  The site is now part of the Starks Building garage.
