Trade or vocational education began with an experimental school conducted by the Consumers League of Louisville, circa 1914. When this proved successful, the Louisville Board of Education took it over and opened the Pre-Vocational School (sometimes spelled as Prevocational). Its first location was at Seventeenth and Madison streets. In 1914 it was located at Eighth and Chestnut Streets. In 1918 the name was changed to the Louisville Vocational School, which was later succeeded by Ahrens.
