Following the closing of the George D. Prentice Elementary School, the building became the Stevens School for the Retarded in 1964. Five years later, the school's name was changed back to Prentice School while it continued to serve the mentally handicapped with more public education classes than offered previously. The classes were moved to the Henry Clay School building in 1971 and Prentice was closed.
