Official Name: Wheeler Elementary School
Year Opened: 1969
Wheeler Elementary is named for Virginia Wheeler, a former Jefferson County teacher and administrator who was a supervisor in the areas of health, safety, and lunchrooms. Wheeler was constructed to relieve school overcrowding in the Fern Creek area. The school opened in the fall of 1969 in double sessions at Fern Creek Elementary and moved to its newly built facility in January 1970. Wheeler was a pioneer in grouping primary children without regard to grade levels.
