Official Name: Schaffner Elementary School
Year Opened: 1955
Schaffner opened in 1955 and is named for Henry B. Schaffner, a Shively civic leader who served on the Jefferson County board of education for many years. Schaffner operated as an elementary school from 1955 to 1980, when it closed. The school became an administrative building known as Schaffner Annex housing Library Media Services and Central Technical Services. In the mid-1980's the property was almost sold for conversion to apartments. Instead it was opened in 1988 as a regional kindergarten known as the Schaffner Pre-school. Four years later in 1992, Schaffner was reopened as a traditional elementary school.
