Elementary School Archives O-Z: Shelby

Official Name: Shelby Traditional Academy

Year Opened: 1915

The Germantown School at 930 Mary Street was changed to Isaac Shelby School in 1915. The school name change was originally initiated due to the school's proximity to Shelby Park and the Shelby branch of the Louisville Free Public Library. Isaac was added to the school name to honor Kentucky's first governor. The 1891 vintage building was remodeled in 1968. Shelby moved to a new building on Ziegler Street in Lincoln-Preston Park in 2004. Shelby Elementary became Shelby Traditional Academy in 2009 to reflect its designation as a traditional magnet program.

Bloom Elementary temporarily occupied Shelby's old building while its facility on Lucia Avenue was renovated. After Bloom vacated in 2005, the old school building was auctioned to Sojourn Church. The church planned to renovate the building for a sanctuary, art gallery, music venue and community center.
