Western opened in 1961 for grades seven, eight, and nine. Grades were added to expand the school to the twelfth grade. A brick gymnasium and junior high wing were added in 1975. Among the programs offered at Western is a culinary program which caters special events held by JCPS and private events such as weddings and business meetings. In 1995 the school's name was changed to reflect the creation of its math, science, and technology magnet program. The magnet program ended in 2008 and the school's name was returned to the original Western High School in November 2011.
