Archives High Schools: Louisville Male

Official Name: Louisville Male High School

Year Opened: 1856

1st Graduating Class: 1859

Louisville Male is the oldest public high school west of the Allegheny Mountains.  Its first location was at Ninth and Chestnut streets.  In 1898 the school moved to First Street near Chestnut.   Male relocated to 911 S. Brook Street in 1915 where it remained until 1991.  In 1915 Male was merged with archrival duPont Manual High to form Louisville Boys High School in the Brook Street building.  Male resumed operation as an independent high school in 1919 when the merger proved unsuccessful.  The school became coed in 1952.  Male moved to Preston Highway to the former Durrett High building in 1991.  Its longtime "Brook and Breck" (Breckinridge) street facility became an office building known as the Spectrum.  In late 2007 the Salvation Army bought the facility.  The Salvation Army moved its headquarters there and operates a shelter for homeless people.
