Archives High Schools: Fern Creek

Official Name: Fern Creek High School

Year Opened: 1923

1st Graduating Class: 1926

Fern Creek High, which opened in 1923, is the first high school of the former county system. Community residents petitioned for a high school in the 1910's. Two organizations, the Fern Creek Commercial Club and the Fern Creek Parents Teachers Association (PTA), secured money for the construction of a general school building for Fern Creek in 1921. The high school department opened in Fern Creek Elementary in 1923 when 25 students were recruited. Fern Creek High moved into its own building in 1941. New wings were added due to increasing enrollment in 1954 and in the 1970's. A new wing in 1973 replaced the original portion of the building. The Board of Education proposed closing Fern Creek High in 1981 but discovery of outstanding debts in building the school, along with strong community support, kept the school open. Fern Creek's official name included the word Traditional from the late 1990s until it was changed back to Fern Creek High School in January 2015.
