Seneca opened in 1957 and originally bore the name of Goldsmith Junior High School. It was renamed in November 1957. Seneca's mascot name was originally the Redskins and the school has a reproduction of cartoonist Al Capp's character Lonesome Polecat. In the 1990's the mascot was changed to the Redhawks. Additions to the school include a second gymnasium (the Kenneth Farmer Athletic Building), the Stickler Theater, new science labs, a new media center, a technology lab, and a greenhouse.
