Elaine Whelan Literacy Fund

Each week, volunteers contribute many hours in the Marie E. Stopher library to make a variety of literacy programs, media, and many reading materials available to students.  Elaine Whelan has been an outstanding volunteer for the past six years.  Elaine was a certified teacher and spent 25 years at the U of L School of Education.  She has an amazing knowledge of children’s authors and literature.  She now spends her time volunteering in the library at Stopher each week. Elaine uses her knowledge and love of literature to match students with interesting books, creates displays to promote genres, shelves books,  assists kindergarten students with receiving an emergent level book each night, and much more.  Her family recently created the Elaine Whelan Literacy Fund through the Jefferson County Education Foundation to ensure that her love of children’s literature will be shared now and in the future.  Donors may contribute to the fund in Elaine’s honor and the money will be used to purchase new reading materials for all the students at Stopher Elementary to enjoy.
