Apollo : the brilliant one

Name Rebecca Schlafer
Title Apollo: the brilliant one
Author George O'Connor
ISBN 9781626720152
Publisher First Second
Classification Graphic Novel
Recommended Level Middle
Rating (1-5 with 5 being the highest) 3
Summary This graphic novel tells the story of the birth of Apollo and his twin sister. The book is narrated by the 9 muses. Each of the muses tells a story about Apollo including Apollo defeating Python and the chase of Daphne that resulted in her turning into a tree. The book includes a glossary, author's note and other supplemental materials.
Would you recommend this book?  Why or why not? Yes.  Students love these books. They are part of a series including gods and goddesses, but they don't just appeal to students who like history. The pictures, the text and the layout resemble a Marvel comic book. The vocabulary in this book is higher, and some of the word choice is antiquated which could be harder for some students. Another reason I like these books is because they cover 7th grade Social Studies standards. It is always good to have books that meet both academic and personal reading needs.

Jimmy has to accept his friends not understanding his comic, his own insecurities and the risk of putting himself out there creatively.
Would you recommend this book?  Why or why not? Yes.  It is great to see Jimmy change throughout the book in a realistic way that male readers can understand. Jimmy has a romantic interest in the book and it is also nice to see romance of young man's point of view. The plot is a little slow paced, but I think that for students who only read graphic novels this could be a nice change of pace.

Once Arthur discovers the sculpture he and Mr. Hampton work together to complete the sculpture until Mr. Hampton dies suddenly. Would you recommend this book?  Why or why not? Yes.  The book is long for a middle school student at 273 pages, but Arthur is a dynamic character who undergoes a series of changes that will interest students. This would be a good book for a regular reader because the plot is slow moving, but there is pay off in the end. I also think this book would be good for a literature circle or a book club.
