Stuart Middle opened in a building on the campus of Stuart High School in 1980. The following year Stuart High closed and its building became the home of an enlarged Stuart Middle School. Both Stuart schools were named for famous Kentucky writer Jesse Stuart, a renowned novelist and poet laureate of the Commonwealth. In August 2016 Stuart became Stuart Seventh and Eighth Grade Academy. Robert Frost Sixth-Grade Academy relocated to share part of the Stuart facility.
